Nutsey Lake

The water at Nutsey Lake sits calm and dark, ringed by woodland that feels properly isolated despite being just outside Ashurst. It's a small affair - nothing like the grand reservoirs you might be expecting - but that's rather the point. The lake draws walkers and the odd angler, and you can do a circuit of the water in under an hour if you're moving steadily.

This is a spot for people who like their countryside quiet and unadorned. No facilities, no crowds, no gift shop. You get trees, water, and the occasional bird. Families might manage twenty minutes before the kids kick up a fuss, though older children who actually enjoy a walk will find it decent enough. Photographers working in soft light can spend longer picking out reflections and the surrounding woodland.

Timing-wise, late afternoon when the sun drops lower gives the best light. Spring and autumn are loveliest - summer weekends can bring a few more visitors, though it never feels rammed.

It works well as a short break during a longer holiday based at Ashurst Campsite or Matley Wood if you're after a gentle walk rather than a major outing.
