Nut Crackers (Site of Logan Stone)

The Logan Stone sits on Dartmoor proper, a short walk from South Brent, and it's one of those spots that makes you understand why our ancestors were obsessed with marking the landscape. This particular rocking stone - known locally as the Nut Crackers - is a massive granite boulder that genuinely does rock when you push it, though whether you'll manage to shift it depends entirely on your leverage and the phase of the moon, or so the old stories go.

It's a straightforward walk across open moorland to reach it, nothing too demanding but you'll want decent boots. The stone itself sits in isolation, which is rather the point - you can stand there and contemplate what people thousands of years ago saw in this particular arrangement of rock. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretive panels explaining what you're looking at. Just the stone and the moor.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring Dartmoor's Bronze Age sites and stone circles. Families with restless kids might find the walk itself more engaging than the destination - it's moorland, so it's exposed and windswept in equal measure. Walkers doing longer Dartmoor routes would naturally pass nearby.

If you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park - the adults-only option just outside South Brent - this makes a decent half-morning excursion. No charge to visit, obviously. Allow an hour including the walk and a bit of poking around.
