Nursery Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination with facilities, Nursery Wood sits just outside Northampton and delivers exactly what it says on the tin: trees, paths, and a decent bit of breathing space from the town. The woodland is mixed - oak, ash, and younger growth - with enough shade to make it pleasant even on warmer days, though don't expect dramatic viewpoints or much in the way of infrastructure.

Walkers will find this most rewarding. The paths are generally clear and the terrain is forgiving, making it suitable for families with older children, though parents with pushchairs might struggle in places. History types won't find much to latch onto here - it's working woodland rather than a heritage site - but that's partly the appeal. You get the sense of ordinary English woodland doing its job rather than anything manicured.

Allow two hours for a decent circuit. The wood is small enough that you won't get lost, large enough that you won't feel rushed. Best avoided in heavy rain when paths turn boggy. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions.

It's the sort of place that works well alongside other activities in the area rather than as a standalone trip - Northampton itself has attractions worth half a day, and combining both gives you a fuller picture of the area.
