Nunfield Golf Course

Nunfield is a proper working golf course just outside Dumfries, and unless you've got your handicap card in your pocket, there's not much point making the journey. It's a members-run setup, the kind of place where the locals know every blade of grass and the clubhouse chat matters as much as the scorecard.

If golf is your thing, you'll want to ring ahead before turning up - visitor play exists but it's not the sort of club that welcomes random walk-ins off the street. The course itself sits in that soft, rolling Dumfriesshire landscape that makes the Scottish Lowlands rather agreeable for a round, assuming the weather plays ball. Which it doesn't always.

For a park holiday in the area, you're well placed if you're bunking down at Newbridge Country Park just 1.8 miles away, or any of the other lodges dotted within a few miles - Nunland Hillside Lodges and Marthrown of Mabie are close enough for a morning round. But here's the thing: if you're not a golfer or an aspiring member, spend your time exploring Dumfries town itself or the walks around the Nith Valley instead. The course won't hold your attention otherwise, and there are better uses of a Scottish afternoon. Check opening hours and visitor rates on their website before you drive out - you'll save yourself a wasted trip.
