Norton's Broad

The water here is properly still first thing in the morning - that's when you want to come to Norton's Broad. It's one of Norfolk's quieter broads, the kind where you actually hear birdsong instead of outboard motors, and it makes a real difference to the whole experience.

You're looking at a freshwater lake that sits just east of Wroxham, surrounded by the kind of low-lying landscape that defines this corner of Norfolk. Most people arrive by boat - it's what the Broads are for - but you can also walk the perimeter and get decent views from the banks. The reed beds are thick here, which means the wildlife is excellent. Kingfishers, marsh harriers, grebes. Bring binoculars and patience.

Walkers will get a solid hour or two out of it depending on how keen you are. The flat terrain means it's accessible for families and older visitors, though the paths can be muddy and narrow in places. It's not the kind of spot where kids will tear about - there's nowhere to do that - but if they're into nature and water, they won't complain.

If you're staying at Norfolk Broads Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which is less than five miles away, this is absolutely worth building into a day. It won't take up your whole afternoon, which means you can combine it with walks round Wroxham or time on a hire boat. Free to visit and quiet enough that you won't feel rushed. Go early or late in the day if you can.
