Northumberlandia Hip

You'll spot this one from miles away - a 34-metre earthwork shaped like a reclining woman, sprawled across the Northumberland landscape near Morpeth. It's the work of artist Charles Jencks, completed in 2012, and it's properly ambitious: 1.3 million tonnes of earth shifted to create what looks like a giant lying figure when viewed from above or the surrounding hills.

What actually happens when you visit? You walk around it, mostly. The shape becomes clearer from certain angles - there's a designated viewing area that gives you the best perspective. Some people hike up for the aerial photo opportunity; others just drive by and think "well, that's odd." You get a sense of the sheer scale once you're up close, and there are decent views across the surrounding farmland and towards Coquet Valley.

Historically inclined visitors might appreciate the Land Art context, though it's not a traditional heritage site. Families with restless kids could spend 30 minutes here; serious walkers use it as a waypoint on longer routes through the area. On a clear day it's worth the detour if you're in Morpeth already, but don't make a special trip from Newcastle just for this.

Access appears to be free and open year-round - no gates, no visitor centre. Spring and early summer offer the best light for photography. Tranwell Farm Holidays is just five miles south, making this an easy add-on to a park break in the region.
