Northumberlandia

You're standing on what looks like a proper hill, except it isn't. Northumberlandia is a colossal earth sculpture - a reclining female figure carved into the landscape near Morpeth - and it's genuinely arresting when you realize what you're looking at. The scale is mad: 55 acres of land shaped into a woman's head, torso, and legs, visible from certain angles but almost completely hidden if you're standing on it. Which is precisely why you should walk it.

The site's free to access and open year-round, though there's minimal infrastructure - no cafes, no visitor centre, just you and a very large geographical artwork. Allow an hour or two to explore properly, longer if you want to photograph it from different vantage points. The best views come from the eastern side where you can see the contours properly. Muddy in winter, blazing in summer. Spring and early autumn hit the sweet spot.

It's more concept than conventional attraction, which means families with young kids might get restless after thirty minutes, but older children and anyone interested in land art or landscape architecture will find it compelling. Walkers absolutely love it - there's something satisfying about traversing a giant sculpture. It works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to Tranwell Farm Holidays, just five miles away, or combining it with other Northumberland sites. Not everyone's cup of tea, admittedly, but if you appreciate ambitious art projects and don't mind countryside wandering, it's worth the detour.
