Northiam Playing Field

There's a modest strip of grassland just outside Robertsbridge that locals have quietly protected for decades. Northiam Playing Field is exactly what it says - a working sports ground that happens to sit on land of genuine ecological value. You won't find marked trails or information boards here, which is rather the point.

What makes it worth knowing about is the mix of habitats. Open meadow, hedgerows, and wetland patches support birds and small mammals that have largely vanished from the surrounding farmland. Spring's when it really sings if you're into wildflowers and breeding birds. Autumn brings migrating species. It's the sort of place that rewards patience and binoculars rather than expecting easy access or facilities.

This is genuinely for nature enthusiasts and serious walkers, not casual day-trippers. You're looking at a quiet morning or evening ramble, maybe an hour or so depending on what you spot. It works brilliantly as part of a wider exploration of the Rother Valley - that whole stretch between Robertsbridge and the Kent border has excellent walking country.

If you're based at The Original Hut Company's glamping site just down the road, this would make a proper morning outing before breakfast. Bring decent binoculars and a field guide. Don't expect facilities - there's nowhere to buy coffee, nowhere to sit. Just good open countryside doing what it should.
