Northcroft Park

The walk through Northcroft Park starts quietly enough - a few unmarked paths threading through woodland just west of Newbury, nothing that announces itself as particularly special. But that's rather the point. This is a proper nature reserve, the kind of place where you actually might spot something interesting rather than just walk in circles taking photos.

The reserve itself is small and manageable, ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites like Cherry Bird Country Park or Rhodeside Caravan Club and want a gentle morning out. The paths wind through mixed woodland and open grassland, and depending on the season you'll find wildflowers, birds, and the occasional glimpse of what passes for countryside round Newbury. It's not going to bowl you over with dramatic vistas or ancient monuments - there's no entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense to navigate.

Historically minded types might appreciate knowing the land itself, but you won't find plaques or interpretation boards spelling everything out. Walkers will find it a reasonable hour-long loop without being taxing. Families with young children might struggle if the paths are wet and muddy - bring proper boots.

What works best is treating it as a pocket nature reserve between more substantial days out. Base yourself at Bishops Green Farm Campsite or Hollington Park Glamping if you're staying longer, and use Northcroft for a quiet mid-week morning when you can't face anything ambitious. It's the sort of place that rewards you for going when others aren't about.
