Northballo Hill

The walk up Northballo Hill takes you out of Perth into proper Perthshire countryside, away from the town's hustle. It's a modest peak rather than a dramatic summit - nothing like the big Cairngorms stuff further north - but that's precisely why it works so well for a half-day outing.

The climb itself is straightforward and won't knacker you. You get decent views across the Tay Valley once you're up there, and on a clear day you can see enough to make the effort worthwhile. The hill sits well within walking distance of Perth, so it's ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Beech Hedge and don't fancy a full day's expedition. Families with older kids handle it fine; younger ones might find it a bit dull without a summit café at the top.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours return from the base. The paths are fairly obvious, though waterlogged patches aren't uncommon in winter. Spring and autumn are your best bet - crisp, clear, and the mud hasn't turned everything into a bog.

What makes it genuinely useful is the lack of crowds. You'll rarely find the busy-Saturday-afternoon vibe that plagues more famous hills. It's the sort of walk where you can actually hear yourself think, which is reason enough to do it if you're based nearby. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid, unpretentious half-day from Perth.
