North Yorkshire Moors Railway - (Goathland Station)

The railway platform at Goathland is frozen in time, all red brick and Victorian ironwork, and yes, it's the one from the films. But here's the thing - it works as a proper railway station too, not just a film set. Steam trains actually pull in here several times a week during the season, and you can ride them all the way to Pickering or back towards Whitby.

The station itself is small and genuinely atmospheric. The buildings, the old lamps, the waiting room with its period details - it all feels authentic because it is. You're not walking through a museum recreation; you're standing where trains have stopped for over a century. On train days, it gets rammed with families and enthusiasts, so arrive early if you want photos without crowds blocking your shot.

Allow an hour if you're just having a poke around and grabbing a coffee. Add half a day if you're actually riding the rails. The journey through the moors is the real draw - rolling hills, moorland, proper countryside. Kids under ten tend to lose interest in the station itself after twenty minutes, but put them on a steam train and they're entranced.

Goathland itself is a village with stone cottages and very little else, which is rather the point. It's about ten miles inland from Whitby. If you're staying at Broadings Farm Caravan Site nearby, this makes an easy afternoon outing. Combine it with walking in the North York Moors National Park for a solid day out. Entry to the station is free; you only pay if you want to ride the train.
