North Shore Beach

The stretch of sand at North Shore runs along Conwy's waterfront, backed by the town's Victorian promenade. It's a working beach in the truest sense - you'll see fishing boats moored offshore, which gives it proper character rather than the manicured feel of some north Wales seafronts.

The beach itself is decent for paddling and building castles if you've got young kids, though the sand can be shingly depending on the tide. The real draw is the setting. That view across the water to Conwy Castle is genuinely striking, especially in soft afternoon light. You can walk the full stretch in about 20 minutes without rushing.

Walkers will appreciate the continuation eastward towards Penmaenmawr - the promenade path is flat and easy. History types should factor in at least an hour to explore the castle ruins towering above; it's practically on your doorstep from the beach.

Weather is the key variable here. Summer bank holidays bring crowds, but aim for a crisp autumn afternoon and you'll have it mostly to yourself. Llandudno's bigger beaches are just along the coast if you want more facilities, but there's something less touristy about North Shore that rewards actually stopping.
