North Rake Hill

The walk up North Rake Hill from Hawes isn't long, but it's properly steep in places and the wind can catch you off guard near the top. You're looking at maybe an hour up, less coming down if your knees are forgiving. The view across Wensleydale opens up gradually as you climb - not dramatic in the way some peaks are, but honest. On a clear day you can pick out the valley floor clearly enough to spot where you've just come from.

It's the kind of walk that rewards you without demanding hours of your time. Families with decent legs will manage it fine, though toddlers might struggle with the gradient. Walkers passing through the Yorkshire Dales will find it a sensible half-day outing, especially if the weather's holding. You won't find a café at the summit or any facilities to speak of - bring water and a proper map.

Stay at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and you're barely more than a mile away, which makes this perfect for a morning excursion before exploring the market town itself. Usha Gap Farm further out offers more space if you're after a quieter base. The Dales have no shortage of walks, so North Rake Hill works best as part of a longer trip rather than a solo destination, but it's worth the climb.
