North Pier

Walking out onto North Pier on a proper Blackpool day - salt air, screaming gulls, the clank of the amusement arcades behind you - this is the real seaside experience. Built in 1863, it's the oldest of Blackpool's three piers and it shows in the best way possible. The Victorian ironwork is genuine, not some Heritage Centre pastiche. You get the full theatrical setup here: fairground rides, amusement arcades humming with the sound of coins, fish and chips kiosks, and stretches of weathered decking where you can just stand and watch the Irish Sea.

It's worth an hour of your time, maybe two if you've got kids who want to have a go on the rides or test themselves at the arcade games. The pier isn't trying too hard - there's a refreshing lack of gimmickry about it. You'll see families, couples, a few loners contemplating life by the railings. On a calm day the views back towards the seafront and the Tower are genuine and uncluttered.

Admission is free to walk the pier itself, though rides and arcades cost extra. The weather dictates everything here - a grey November afternoon will feel entirely different from a sunny August bank holiday. If you're staying at Haven Marton Mere or Newton Hall Holiday Park, you're minutes away. It slots naturally into a Blackpool break without feeling mandatory. Not groundbreaking, but proper old-school British seaside done without apology.
