North Newbald Becksies

The beck runs clear over chalk and flint, and you'll hear it before you see it - that constant, gentle murmur that makes you slow down without thinking. North Newbald Becksies is a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve near Brough, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit.

This isn't a manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards at every turn. It's genuine habitat - wet woodland, scrub, and those chalk streams that give it its name. You're looking for birds, especially warblers and wildfowl depending on season, and the whole thing feels properly wild despite being accessible. Spring is excellent here; autumn's decent too if you time it right.

Walkers will get the most from this reserve. It's not a major destination on its own - an hour's exploration feels about right - but it pairs brilliantly with a stay at William's Den, just 2.5 miles away. That's close enough for a morning visit before the day heats up or a late afternoon ramble. If you're doing a broader park holiday in the area, slot this in between the bigger attractions rather than making it your main event.

Admission's free, as is standard with YWT reserves. Bring waterproofs - the paths can be boggy even days after rain - and decent boots. Binoculars are genuinely useful here. Kids over seven will probably enjoy it; younger ones might find the paths a bit muddy and the lack of obvious activity frustrating. Birdwatchers will absolutely love it.
