North Hill

The walk up North Hill near Perth isn't going to leave you breathless, but that's rather the point. This modest peak offers proper views across the Tay Valley without the slog of the higher Perthshire hills. The summit itself is unremarkable - a few rocks, some heather, nothing you'd photograph for Instagram. But the walk there is straightforward enough for families, and from the top you get a genuine sense of the landscape spreading out below.

You're looking at roughly two hours return from Perth town centre, which makes it ideal if you've got an afternoon spare rather than a full day. The path is well-trodden and accessible year-round, though it can be boggy after heavy rain. There's something to be said for a hill walk that doesn't demand proper fell boots and an early start.

If you're staying at Greenhill Farm Glamping or Maycroft Retreat - both within a couple of miles - this is a cracking spot for stretching your legs without overdoing it. It works well alongside other Perthshire walks if you're doing a week's holiday, or even as a warm-up before tackling something more serious in the hills further north.

Truth is, North Hill won't be the highlight of your trip. But it's free, it's accessible, and on a clear day it reminds you why people come to Perthshire in the first place.
