North Hill

The walk up North Hill rewards you with proper views across Ayrshire - the kind that make you understand why people bother with Scottish peaks in the first place. It's not a dramatic scramble or anything, more a straightforward pull up moorland that takes the best part of an hour depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath.

What you get at the top is a 360-degree sweep of the lowlands rolling away in every direction. On a clear day you can pick out landmarks for miles. The hill itself is bare and honest - no fancy viewpoint platforms or cafes, just grass, wind, and genuine countryside. Walkers will get real value here, and families with older kids who don't mind a steady gradient will find it manageable without being a slog.

Bring decent boots. The ground can be boggy depending on weather, and the paths aren't always obvious. Allow a couple of hours return from the car park. Free to walk, obviously. Best tackled in decent visibility - there's not much point going up in mist, and navigation becomes tedious when you can't see where you're heading.
