North Hill

A steep climb from Minehead gets you to North Hill, where the views over Exmoor and down to the Bristol Channel actually justify the huffing and puffing. The walk itself is straightforward enough - it's the gradient that catches people out. You're looking at maybe thirty to forty minutes up depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath and take photos.

Once you're up there, it's proper worth it. The panorama sweeps from the Welsh coast on clear days, with Minehead sprawled below and the moorland rolling inland. On a grey afternoon it can feel a bit bleak, but that's half the charm. There's nowhere to eat or buy drinks, so bring water and a snack if you're thinking of lingering.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and young kids might find it dull unless they're already keen on hills. The payoff is the view and the sense of having earned it, which appeals to people who actually want to move their legs on holiday rather than just wander around shops.

Combine it easily with Exmoor National Park rambles or softer walks around Minehead itself. If you're staying at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club or Butlins, you're minutes away. Even from Hoburne Blue Anchor it's a reasonable drive. Go early if the weather looks decent - cloud rolls in fast here, and a misty summit is a waste of the effort.
