North East Koi

The koi tanks at North East Koi near Stanley are genuinely hypnotic if you've got any interest in these fish at all. We spent a solid hour watching them - something about the way they move through water is properly meditative. The collection spans different varieties and sizes, so you get a real sense of what serious koi keeping involves, from the tiny juveniles to the absolute monsters that cost more than a car.

It's not a massive visitor attraction in the theme-park sense. This is specialist territory, which means it works best for anyone actually considering keeping koi themselves, or just people who want to see fish beyond the standard goldfish tank. Kids under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're already obsessed with fish. Teenagers? They'll lose interest quickly.

The main draw is seeing how these fish are housed and cared for - the filtration systems alone are staggering. It's educational without feeling like school. You'll understand why proper koi keeping is expensive and why some people spend their retirement money on it.

If you're staying at Beamish Holiday Park or the five-star Beamish Glamping site just down the road, this makes a decent rainy-day stop before or after exploring Beamish Museum. It's close enough that you won't waste half a day getting there. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're seriously into fish. Worth the detour if you're passing through Stanley, less so if you're making a special trip.
