Norfolk Wildlife Trust – Buxton Heath

The heathland east of Norwich feels properly wild for Norfolk - open, windswept, and full of the kind of plants you'll not see anywhere else. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust runs Buxton Heath, and it's one of those places where you realise how rare this landscape actually is. Heath habitat has nearly vanished from England, so what's here matters.

Walking the open ground, you'll spot gorse, heather, and bilberry if you time it right. Adders bask on the paths in warm months (they won't bother you), and bird watchers come specifically for the nightjars and woodlarks. The views are big and empty - quite meditative after a day pottering around Norwich's market and museums.

It's not showy. There are no facilities, no visitor centre, no gift shop. You turn up, walk, and that's it. Families with restless young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment - it's not a park with playgrounds and ice cream vans. But walkers, birders, and anyone wanting genuine quiet will love it. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly.

Free to visit, naturally. Best visited between May and August when the heathland flowers and the birds are nesting. It sits perfectly alongside a stay at Moat Island Glamping or Top Farm Campsite - both within a few miles - as a proper Norfolk nature break between easier attractions.
