Niver Hill

Climbing this modest Somerset peak feels like discovering a forgotten viewpoint that most people walk straight past. At 300 metres above sea level, Niver Hill won't challenge serious fell walkers, but it delivers surprisingly good views across the Somerset Levels without the crowds you'll find at nearby Glastonbury Tor. The ascent takes about 20 minutes from the village below, following a well-trodden path through mixed woodland before opening onto grassy slopes near the summit.

Families with older children will manage the walk easily enough, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections. What makes this hill special is the sense of space once you reach the top - rolling countryside stretches in every direction, with Wells Cathedral visible on clear days. Dog walkers seem to love it here, and you'll often have the summit to yourself mid-week.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Bucklegrove or Wells Touring Park, it's a proper local walk rather than a tourist trail. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, but that's part of its appeal.
