Newton Hill

The walk up Newton Hill takes about forty minutes from Hawick, and it's one of those modest Borders climbs that surprises you with how much it rewards the effort. The summit sits at 1,370 feet, which doesn't sound like much until you're standing there looking back down the valley toward the town, with the rolling moorland spreading out in every direction like someone's thrown a brown-and-green blanket across the landscape.

It's a proper walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. No visitor centre, no cafe, no parking lot full of coaches. What you get instead is quiet, decent views across the Borders, and the satisfaction of having climbed something real without breaking a sweat. The path is straightforward enough - locals know it well, and on a clear day you'll see why. On a grey one, it's moody and atmospheric in that way Scottish hills do so well.

This works best for anyone who enjoys being outdoors without faffing about with logistics. Families with capable walkers will get something from it; young kids might find it a bit of a slog for views that don't sing until you're at the top. Hawick itself is your basecamp - small market town with the usual services - and if you're staying at Stouslie Snugs just up the road, it's an obvious morning adventure before breakfast. Worth the trip if you're already in the area, not worth driving here just for this.
