Newport Collective

The Newport Collective sits right in the heart of Newport's town centre, a converted space that punches well above its weight as a contemporary art gallery. It's the sort of place that makes you realise Pembrokeshire isn't all seaside villages and coastal walks - there's actual creative energy bubbling away inland too.

Inside, you'll find rotating exhibitions of work by Welsh artists and makers, alongside craft studios where you can sometimes catch people actually working. The space itself feels lived-in rather than sterile, which means it doesn't exhaust you the way some galleries do. A proper working creative hub rather than a trophy wall.

This works best if you're already in Newport - perhaps stopping between the Preseli Mountains and the coast - rather than as a destination in itself. It's ideal for a forty-minute browse if you're into contemporary art and craft, less so if you're dragging reluctant teenagers around. Artists and makers will appreciate the ethos more than casual visitors.

If you're based at Llwyngwair Manor just down the road, or camping at The Hide or Trewrach, it's genuinely worth a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon. The town itself has decent cafes and food spots, so you can make an afternoon of it. Just check their website or ring ahead before you go - opening times and exhibitions vary, and there's nothing worse than finding a gallery locked up when you've specifically come to visit.
