Newclose Wood

The forest floor at Newclose Wood is thick with moss and fallen leaves - proper quiet in here, away from the bustle of Windermere just down the road. It's a decent stretch of woodland with enough paths to keep you occupied for a couple of hours, though don't expect dramatic views or anything too showy. The trees are tall enough to make you forget you're near a holiday park, which is the whole point really.

Walkers will appreciate the shelter on drizzly days, and families with kids aged five upwards should find enough to explore without getting restless. The ground can be boggy after rain, so wellies are wise. There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could spot, so come prepared.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Limefitt Holiday Park or Fallbarrow Holiday Park - both just a short drive away - Newclose Wood makes a straightforward half-morning outing. It works well as a gentle break between bigger Lake District walks, rather than a destination in its own right. The woodland feels genuinely local, the sort of place locals know and tourists miss, which gives it a certain appeal. Not the most dramatic corner of Cumbria, but honest woodland walking that does what it says on the tin.
