Holehird Tarn

The tarn sits quietly above Windermere town, fringed by conifers and feeling genuinely tucked away despite being barely ten minutes' drive from the main tourist drag. It's small - you'll walk the perimeter in under an hour - but that's rather the point. The water reflects whatever sky's doing that day, and the surrounding woodland keeps things intimate and calm.

This is walker territory, really. The footpath meanders through trees down to the water's edge, and you can loop around easily enough. Families with young kids will manage it fine, though there's no playground nonsense to entertain them - bring a picnic and let them chuck stones in. History buffs won't find much except the tarn itself, which has been here long enough that locals know it properly.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour if you're just stretching your legs, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sit-and-stare type. The woodland canopy means it's decent in drizzle, which counts for something in Cumbria. Spring and autumn are genuinely lovely when the place feels even quieter than usual.
