Newcastle seafront foot bridge

The footbridge at Newcastle seafront does exactly what it says on the tin - it gets you across the beach without getting your feet wet. It's a straightforward crossing over the Shimna River where it meets the strand, and it's become the unofficial gateway to exploring this stretch of County Down coastline on foot.

What you're really here for is access to the nature reserve itself. The area around Newcastle is genuinely good for spotting waders and seabirds, particularly during migration seasons. Low tide reveals mudflats that attract curlews and redshank, and if you're patient you might clock grey herons working the shallows. Walkers use the bridge as a launch point for longer hikes towards Slieve Donard and into the Mourne Mountains beyond, but plenty of people just pop over for twenty minutes to watch the water and breathe in the salt air.

It's free to cross and there's no formal opening hours - you're essentially accessing a public right of way. Allow ten minutes if you're just taking photos, longer if you're serious about birdwatching or planning a bigger walk. Peak seasons are spring and autumn when migrating birds pass through, though winter can be dramatic in rough weather.

Stay at one of the caravan parks within walking distance - Woodcroft and Bonny's are practically on the doorstep - and you've got a proper outdoor holiday sorted. Toll more Forest Park is only a couple of miles inland if you want to combine this with woodland walks. The bridge itself is modest, but it's your entry point to a proper slice of the Northern Ireland coast.
