Newcastle promenade

The seafront at Newcastle is one of those stretches that works exactly because it doesn't try too hard. A long, clean promenade curves along the beach with the Mourne Mountains rising dramatically behind - genuinely one of Northern Ireland's better backdrops. You get a proper seaside walk here: ice cream shops, fish and chips joints, and enough space to actually move without tripping over someone's windbreak.

It's the kind of place where an hour becomes two without you noticing. Families do well - the beach is safe for kids, there's a playground, and the promenade itself is flat and easy. Serious walkers use it as a launching point for the Mournes or as a cool-down after tackling Slieve Donard. On a clear day the views across the Irish Sea are genuinely worth photographing.

Free to access, obviously. The walk itself takes whatever time you fancy - twenty minutes for a quick stroll, or an afternoon if you're the lingering type. Summer weekends get busy, so try weekdays or off-season if you want breathing room.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Woodcroft or Windsor are practically on your doorstep, while Tollymore Forest Park sits just inland - this is an essential leg-stretcher between mountain walks. It's accessible enough for the less ambitious but real enough that you won't feel like you've wasted your time.
