Newbury Baptist Church

The Baptist Church on Newbury's high street is one of those Victorian buildings you walk past a hundred times without really clocking it. Pale brick, tall sash windows, solid and unshowy - exactly the kind of chapel that speaks to 19th-century nonconformist values. Step inside and you get a proper sense of how seriously they took their worship. The interior is restrained but dignified, with good natural light and simple wooden pews that have absorbed over a century of Sunday services.

It's not a sprawling cathedral, so you're looking at maybe twenty minutes to have a proper look around, half an hour if you chat with anyone who happens to be about. The real appeal here is architectural rather than dramatic - if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical design or the social history of religious dissent, it's worth a visit. Newbury itself is a market town with actual character - proper shops, decent pubs, the River Kennet running through it. If you're staying at Rhodeside Caravan Club just down the road or trying Hollington Park's glamping set-up, the church is an easy walk into town. Worth combining with a browse of the town centre and a coffee somewhere rather than treating it as a standalone stop. The church is free to enter during service times, though you'd want to ring ahead or check locally for visiting hours outside of Sunday worship.
