Standing at 253 metres, this modest hill offers surprisingly satisfying views across the Solway Firth without demanding too much leg work. The climb from the forest car park takes about 45 minutes at a gentle pace, winding through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland.

Families with older children will find this a manageable introduction to proper hill walking - though the final approach can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and provides lovely panoramic views towards the Lake District fells on clear days.

What makes Newbarns particularly appealing is its proximity to several holiday parks around Dalbeattie. You could easily tackle this in the morning before heading to nearby Sandyhills Bay for an afternoon on the beach, or use it as a gentle warm-up before attempting something more demanding in the Galloway Hills.

The lack of crowds is both blessing and curse - you'll likely have the summit to yourself, but the paths aren't always obvious. OS map recommended, though the route is straightforward enough for confident walkers. Allow two hours return, longer if you fancy extending the walk along the ridge.
