New Wood

Walking into New Wood east of Stevenage, you're straight into proper ancient woodland - the kind of place where the canopy closes in above you and you lose track of how long you've been wandering. It's a working forest managed by locals who understand these trees have been here for centuries, not some manicured nature reserve.

The paths wind through a mix of oak, beech and hornbeam, with enough natural variation to keep things interesting even on a short visit. Depending on the season, you'll find bluebells in spring, decent shade in summer when the Hertfordshire heat gets thick, and that particular kind of autumn scramble through leaf litter that kids actually enjoy. The floor itself tells stories - fallen wood everywhere, old growth rotting back into the soil, fungi having a proper go at the deadwood.

This is walker territory, primarily. If you've got teenagers who can manage an uneven path for an hour without complaining, they'll cope. Younger children might find it samey after thirty minutes. The beauty of New Wood is that it's just forest - no car parks, no visitor centre theatre. You park nearby and go in.

Stay at Jacks Hill Caravans or Baldock Park Homes - both within easy reach - and you're positioned to explore the forest plus Stevenage's broader green spaces. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time. Go midweek if you want solitude. There's something oddly restorative about a wood that doesn't try too hard to impress you.
