New Theatre

The New Theatre in Peterborough is a working performance space that actually pulls in proper touring productions - West End shows, stand-up comedians, ballet companies, the lot. It's the sort of place where you might catch something genuinely good rather than amateur dramatics, which matters if you're basing yourself at Ferry Meadows or Nene Outdoors for a few days.

The building itself is modern and functional rather than grand, but that's fine. What counts is what's on stage. You'll find pantomime in winter, comedy nights scattered through the year, and the occasional play or musical worth the ticket price. Check their website for the schedule before you book your caravan stay - that's the key to making this work.

It's one of those attractions that won't fill an entire day, obviously. Go for an evening performance, grab dinner beforehand in Peterborough town centre, and you've got a solid night out. The theatre's location makes it accessible enough from both campsites - three miles or so is an easy drive. If you've got teenagers in tow who are beyond the usual park entertainment, an evening here beats another trip to the soft play.

Not a reason to visit Cambridgeshire on its own, but if the weather turns wet during your holiday and you want something indoors that doesn't involve shopping, it deserves a look. Book ahead, though - popular shows sell out.
