The water itself is clear enough to watch fish moving, and there's a decent walk around the perimeter if you're after a leg-stretch without committing to anything ambitious. The banks are reasonably accessible, making it manageable for families with younger kids or anyone not keen on serious terrain. On a quiet weekday morning, you might have the whole place to yourself.

It's free to visit, obviously - there's no infrastructure to speak of, no café, no visitor centre. Just water, trees, and the occasional angler. That's either refreshing or underwhelming depending on what you came for. If you want Instagram moments and manicured gardens, look elsewhere. If you want to sit by water and actually hear yourself think, this delivers.

Stay at one of the glamping spots within five miles - Eden Grange's got the best reviews - and slot this in as a quiet morning before heading to somewhere with more going on. It pairs well with exploring Shildon itself or pushing further into Durham's proper attractions. Nothing revolutionary, but sometimes that's the point.
