Nettle Hill

The walk up Nettle Hill is short enough that you won't regret it, but long enough that you've earned the view at the top. From Appleby-in-Westmorland, it's a straightforward trek across the Pennine slopes - nothing technical, just solid Cumbrian fell walking. The summit itself is unremarkable in the way many smaller peaks are; a trig point, some grass, the usual fell markers. But the view south towards High Cup Nick and east across the Eden Valley stops you in your tracks. On a clear day you can pick out the industrial sprawl of Teesside far below, and the higher fells forming a proper border to the landscape.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with decent legs and anyone after a genuine fell experience without the mountaineering. You're looking at two hours there and back at a moderate pace, which makes it perfect if you're based at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road - close enough that you won't waste a morning driving, far enough that it feels like a proper outing. The ground can be boggy after rain, so check the weather and bring proper boots.

Walkers wanting to string together a longer route will find it slots nicely into bigger loops across the Northern Pennines. History buffs might appreciate its position overlooking the old drove roads and medieval settlements dotted through the Eden Valley, though there's little visible archaeology on the hill itself. Not a destination peak in its own right, but a proper working fell that rewards a morning's effort.
