Netherley Down

Netherley Down is a proper woodland walk on the edge of Emsworth, where you can lose an afternoon among beech and oak without needing a map or a membership. The terrain slopes gently through established forest floor thick with leaf litter, and on a clear day you'll catch glimpses across towards West Sussex. There's genuinely nothing fancy about it - no tea rooms, no visitor centre, just trees and air and the occasional dog walker.

This is the sort of place families with restless kids will appreciate for a solid two hours of running about, though older teenagers might find it a bit limited for a full day out. History buffs won't get much from it - it's working woodland rather than heritage site. What it does offer is an escape from the tourist trail. Most people heading to this corner of Hampshire are drawn to the coastal towns, which means Netherley Down stays refreshingly quiet even on weekends.

The walk works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to either Glamping at Wallops Wood or Bow Hill Farm for the evening. Both are within easy reach and offer proper downtime after outdoor exploration. Bring decent shoes if there's been rain - the ground holds moisture. Parking should be straightforward from Emsworth direction. Access appears free, and there are no obvious opening hour restrictions, though darkness will be your limiting factor in winter months.
