Nether Hazelfield Fort

Nether Hazelfield Fort sits quietly in the Dumfries and Galloway landscape, about four miles south of Castle Douglas - a Roman auxiliary fort that most visitors to the region simply drive past without knowing it's there. What remains today are earthwork ramparts and ditches that trace the outline of a 2,000-year-old military installation, offering enough archaeological interest to warrant a short detour if you're into that sort of thing.

It's less dramatic than you might expect. The fort itself is essentially a grassy hummock with the odd ditch - no standing stones, no interpretive boards, just the landscape doing the talking.
