Nesscliffe Hill Country Park

The climb up Nesscliffe Hill takes about twenty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the views across to the Shropshire plains make it genuinely worthwhile. This isn't some manicured forest trail - it's proper Mid Wales woodland, all conifers and bracken, with the kind of paths that get muddy after rain but dry out quickly enough. You'll spot the Iron Age hill fort from various points, which adds a bit of historical meat to what's otherwise a straightforward hill walk. The whole site is free to roam and there's a car park at the base near Oswestry, though it can get a bit rammed on weekends when families pile in. Allow an hour for the circuit if you're stopping for views and photos. Kids aged five upwards will manage it fine - not too steep, just steady. The forest itself feels wild in patches, less like a managed park and more like genuine woodland you've stumbled into. It works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Royal Hill or Seven Oaks - better than driving twenty miles to something more famous. Go early morning if you want the place to yourself, or mid-week in school term if you're avoiding crowds. Winter's actually pleasant here when the trees are bare and visibility is better.
