Nercwys Forest

Walking into Nercwys Forest proper is like stepping back about fifty years. The trees are tall, the paths are quiet, and there's a real sense of being somewhere that hasn't been over-managed or Instagram-fied to death. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing off signage.

This is working woodland in Flintshire, just a decent drive from Chester, with a network of trails that take you through mixed forestry and old mining heritage if you know where to look. The landscape tells a story if you're into that sort of thing - there's industrial archaeology lurking under the bracken. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with a car park the size of a supermarket. That's rather the point.

For walkers with some stamina, it's brilliant. Families with young children might find it a bit thick and undramatic unless they're genuinely keen on woodland exploring. The ground can be proper muddy in winter, and the paths aren't always obvious, so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to see anything worthwhile, longer if you're a slow rambler.
