Neptune Wood

A strip of woodland just outside Oxford that most visitors completely miss. Neptune Wood sits quietly between the city's tourist crush and the Oxfordshire countryside, offering a proper escape without the crowds you'd fight through at Port Meadow or the Botanic Garden.

It's essentially a walk through mature trees - oak, beech, ash - with a few gentle paths that loop through. Nothing dramatic, no waterfall moment or ancient ruin to photograph. What you get instead is the sound of actual silence and enough space to think. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, even in damp weather, and come spring the bluebells are genuinely decent.

Walkers will appreciate it more than families with restless kids. There's no playground, no café, no facilities - just trees and paths. Allow an hour if you meander, less if you're on a mission. Best visited on a weekday morning when Oxford's day-trippers are queuing for colleges and museums.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Ridgeway View Campsite is excellent and only 5.8 miles away - Neptune Wood makes a solid half-morning option before heading into town properly. It's free, always accessible, and genuinely local rather than tourist-trap. Not essential, but if you're staying in the area and fancy a proper walk without the fuss, you'll find it worthwhile. Oxford's north-west fringe, for those navigating by road.
