Neatishead Staithe

The staithe at Neatishead is where the Broads proper reveal themselves - a working mooring point on the River Ant that feels genuinely lived-in rather than prettified for visitors. You'll find traditional wherries still using the water, local fishermen tending boats, and that particular smell of reed and diesel that defines this corner of Norfolk.

It's not a destination you'd spend hours at, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're exploring north of North Walsham. The appeal lies in watching the water traffic actually function - this isn't a museum piece. Families with young kids might find ten minutes enough; serious Broads enthusiasts and photographers will linger longer for the light and the chance to spot wildlife along the banks.

The staithe is free to access and works best as a short stop during a broader Broads exploration, particularly if you're staying at Norfolk Broads Haven or one of the other caravan parks within a few miles. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the reedy banks and reflections - well worth timing your visit accordingly. The real beauty of Neatishead is that it feels removed from the honeypots around Wroxham and Horning, yet you're still only a short drive from proper holiday facilities. Don't expect facilities or refreshments on site. Bring a camera and an eye for working waterways.
