National Trust - Wicken Fen Nature Reserve

The boardwalk at Wicken Fen stretches out across water and wetland like a wooden spine through the reserve's heart - and that's precisely where you need to be to understand what makes this place special. This National Trust nature reserve, just outside Cambridge, is one of England's oldest and most important wetland sites, and unlike some nature reserves where you squint at distant birds through binoculars, here you're genuinely immersed in the habitat.

You'll see dragonflies the size of your hand, reed warblers if you're lucky, and in spring the whole place erupts with wildflowers. The boardwalks are genuinely accessible - no scrambling through mud - which means families with younger kids can actually reach the good bits without everyone getting soaked. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to properly explore rather than just march through.

It's free to visit, which seems almost suspicious given how well-maintained everything is. The fen itself is working wetland, not a manicured garden - things are overgrown and chaotic in the best way. Not ideal if you want manicured paths and a shop selling fudge, but absolutely ideal if you want something real.

Coupled with nearby options like Chittering Park or the glamping spots around Cambridge - Lodeside and Fen Meadows both sit within five miles - you've got the makings of a proper East Anglian break. Wicken works best in May through September when wildlife is actually active rather than hibernating. Go early, bring binoculars, leave the phone in your pocket.
