National Trust - Walton Hill

Walton Hill rises abruptly from the Somerset Levels like something that shouldn't be there at all. This National Trust property near Street offers proper views across the flatlands - the kind that make the walk up worthwhile, even if your legs disagree halfway. The hill itself is modest in height but commanding in presence, which is partly why it's mattered to people for centuries.

What you're actually doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre or tea room, no surrender-your-wallet experience. Just a climb, grassland, and the Polden Hills in the distance. It takes about an hour to do properly unless you're treating it as a quick leg-stretch, in which case half that. The views on a clear day reach across to Glastonbury Tor - you'll spot it immediately because it's unmissable.

This suits walkers more than anyone else. Families with young children might find it a bit of a slog for limited payoff. History types will appreciate the Iron Age fort up there, though there's precious little to actually see - just the earthworks and your own imagination. It's the kind of place that rewards being part of a bigger Somerset holiday rather than a standalone destination.

Camp at Bobsfield Campsite just 1.9 miles away and you've got this on your doorstep. Combine it with walks around the Levels or a visit to nearby attractions, and Walton Hill works as a proper morning out. Go when it's not raining sideways - the views vanish completely otherwise, and there's nothing else holding you there.
