National Trust - Treasurer's House, York

You'll find yourself on a quiet street in York's city centre, standing in front of a Georgian townhouse that looks rather grander than it ought to from the pavement. The Treasurer's House is one of those places that doesn't shout about itself, but once you step inside you realise you've stumbled into something genuinely absorbing. It's a proper home, not a museum trying too hard - three storeys of period rooms furnished as they would have been when wealthy merchants lived here, with a particularly impressive Jacobean kitchen that feels like someone's about to walk in and start cooking.

The real draw is the accumulated detail. Walking through rooms that span centuries of English life - from Tudor times through to the 1930s - you get a proper sense of how people actually lived, not just looked at things in glass cases. Families with children who have decent attention spans will get more out of it than those expecting interactive displays. History enthusiasts could easily spend two hours here without rushing. Casual visitors might manage an hour and feel satisfied.

The house works brilliantly as part of a York holiday - combine it with a walk around the medieval walls or a proper look at the Minster, both within spitting distance.
