National Trust - Studley Royal Park

The water features here are the real draw - a series of geometric ponds and channels that seem almost too perfect to be natural. Walking through Studley Royal Park near Ripon, you're moving through an 18th-century landscape that someone clearly spent a fortune reshaping. There's the crescent moon pond, the octagonal basin, the long canal stretching out - all fed by the River Skell, which you'll hear before you see it threading through the wooded valleys.

It's a National Trust site, which means it's properly maintained and you won't get lost. The walking here is gentle rather than demanding - mostly woodland tracks and open grassland, taking you from the formal gardens around the house ruins down into the more dramatic river gorge. History buffs will spend a good couple of hours picking apart the Edwardian bones of the estate, though there's precious little standing except foundations.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin for a full day on its own. But if you're based at Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park or Riverside Meadows - both solid options three miles away - it makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing to break up your park stay. The views across the valley are genuinely handsome, and there's something satisfying about seeing how ruthlessly manicured nature can be when you've got the cash and the conviction.
