National Trust - Stonehenge Landscape

The stones themselves aren't the whole story here, though of course they're why you've come. What makes this National Trust site genuinely worthwhile is the landscape around them - all 1,500 acres of it. You walk through proper Wiltshire downland, past ancient burial mounds and field systems that tell the real story of how people lived in this corner of England five thousand years ago.

From Salisbury it's a straightforward drive out towards the stones, and honestly, seeing them rise up from the chalk grassland is still jaw-dropping even though you've seen the photos. The walking trails vary from gentle loops to longer routes that take in the wider archaeological context. An hour gets you to the stones and back; three hours lets you actually understand the place. The best bit? Most visitors queue at the visitor centre car park, so if you arrive early and do the walking routes first, you'll have stretches of landscape almost entirely to yourself.

It's not free - entry costs, and car parking too - but the National Trust manages the whole thing thoughtfully. Families with older kids who can manage a couple of miles on foot will find it absorbing. Walkers will appreciate the downland paths. History types will spend half a day here easily. The nearby Stonehenge Campsite offers glamping if you want to wake up in the area, though frankly, a day trip from Salisbury works perfectly well.

Worth the detour? Yes, but go for the landscape and archaeology, not just the photo op.
