National Trust - Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve

The dunes here roll on for what feels like miles, backed by a proper expanse of salt marsh that shifts between gold and grey depending on the light. Sandscale Haws, run by the National Trust, is a nature reserve that takes itself seriously - it's a Site of Special Scientific Interest, though you don't need to care about that to enjoy the walk. What matters is that the whole place feels genuinely wild, even though Dalton-in-Furness is just down the road.

You're here to walk, really. The sandy paths wind through dunes covered in marram grass and sea buckthorn, and you can push right through to the shore if the tide allows. On a clear day the views across Morecambe Bay are outstanding. Birdwatchers will get a lot out of this - terns, plovers, oystercatchers - though you'll need binoculars and patience. Families with restless kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so, but walkers and nature types will happily spend half a day here picking routes through the dunes.

It's free to access, which is the main thing. Allow two hours minimum if you're doing a proper loop, longer if you're photographing or birdwatching. Spring and early autumn are best - the breeding season can be busy with birds, and summer crowds are less likely. Both High Haume Glamping and Harbour Lights Campsite are within a few miles, making this an easy add-on to a longer Cumbrian stay. It's not flashy, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're after genuine coastline rather than a seaside town.
