National Trust - Runnymede

The Thames runs wild here, or at least as wild as the Thames gets. Runnymede is where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 - or so the story goes - and the National Trust has preserved this riverside meadow as a proper reminder that history isn't just in museums. It's a straightforward place: open grassland sloping down to the water, with a handful of interpretation boards explaining what actually happened and why it mattered. Walkers love it. The riverside path is manageable for most fitness levels, and the meadow itself is lovely for a picnic or just sitting and watching the water. Kids will get restless after an hour unless they're the type who enjoy spotting wildlife - herons, kingfishers, the occasional heron again. Free to visit, which is the National Trust doing what they do best. Allow two hours if you're combining it with a proper walk along the towpath toward Windsor. The nearest facilities are in Chertsey, about three miles away, where you'll find the caravan parks clustered around the town. It's the sort of stop that works better as part of a wider Thames Valley jaunt rather than a destination in itself. Good for a morning before moving on to somewhere with more going on. Admission is free, parking might not be - that's where they get you.
