National Trust - River Wey and Godalming Navigations and Dapdune Wharf

The River Wey cuts through Surrey with purpose, and this stretch near Godalming is where the National Trust has done proper work bringing a forgotten waterway back to life. Dapdune Wharf is the heart of it - a restored Victorian wharf where barges once loaded cargo bound for London. Walk along the towpath and you're following the actual route those working boats took two centuries ago.

The Navigations themselves are a genteel affair now. The river's calm enough for a paddle, the banks lined with native trees and wildlife. You'll see ducks, herons if you're lucky, and the water's clear enough to spot fish. The wharf buildings have been converted into a visitor space where you can actually go inside and see how the logistics of canal commerce worked - not dusty museum stuff, but the real kit: pulleys, weights, old photographs of the men who worked here.

Families with young kids will get a solid couple of hours from it. The towpath is flat and pushchair-friendly for the first mile or so, though it gets narrower further out. History types will appreciate the industrial archaeology angle - this wasn't built for leisure, it was pure working infrastructure. Walkers can push on for miles in either direction and barely see another soul.

Based near Godalming, you're well positioned for the surrounding parks. The wharf area itself is free to roam, though check the National Trust website for any seasonal closures.
