National Trust - Prior Park Landscape Garden

The Palladian bridge is the real star here - an 18th-century folly that looks like it's been plucked straight out of a stately home fantasy. Prior Park itself sits on a steep hillside above Bradford-on-Avon, which means the walk around the gardens involves proper climbs and descents. Not a gentle stroll.

This is a landscape garden in the English tradition, designed by Alexander Pope no less, with views over Bath stretched out below when the weather cooperates. The paths wind between woodland, open lawns, and a serpentine lake. It's very much about walking the grounds and taking in the vistas rather than looking at flower beds - the architecture and the way the land has been shaped is what you're paying to see.

Walkers will genuinely enjoy it. Families with young children might find the terrain taxing, though older kids who like clambering about will be fine. History types will appreciate the Georgian-era thinking on display. Allow at least two hours to do it properly without rushing.

The garden is National Trust, so check their website for current admission fees and opening hours before you go - these do shift seasonally. If you're camping at Campwell Farm just 2.6 miles away, or bunking down at Widbrook Barns, Prior Park makes for a proper half-day outing that pairs well with a wander around Bradford-on-Avon itself. The town's got decent cafes and shops if you need refuelling afterwards.
