National Trust - Plymbridge Woods

The River Plym cuts through ancient woodland just four miles north of Plymouth city centre, and Plymbridge Woods is where you'll find yourself properly immersed in it. The National Trust owns this stretch, so it's well maintained without feeling manicured. Expect riverside walks beneath towering oaks and beeches, plenty of moss-covered stones, and that lovely damp woodland smell after rain.

There's a working mill here too - Plymbridge Mill - which adds a bit of historical interest without demanding hours of your time. Most people do the main loop in an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling. The woodland canopy is thick enough that it's genuinely cool on hot days, which is why families often end up here rather than baking on Dartmoor. Kids don't tire of river-spotting and stone-hopping, and the paths are well enough defined that you won't spend the afternoon arguing about directions.

Free to visit, open all hours - it's basically a country walk in National Trust hands. The nearest proper base is Dartmoor Domes, just over two miles away, which means you could reasonably spend a morning here before heading onto the moor itself for lunch. That's the real appeal of Plymbridge: it's an easy warm-up walk, close enough to Plymouth for a quick afternoon visit, but woodland enough to feel like proper countryside. Not spectacular, not rare, but reliable. The sort of place you'll visit twice during a Devon holiday and both times be glad you went.
