National Trust - Penshaw Monument

You'll spot Penshaw Monument from miles away - a colossal Greek temple plonked on top of a hill overlooking the Wear Valley near Durham. It's impossible to miss, really. Built in 1844 as a memorial to the 1st Earl of Durham, the structure is a full-size replica of the Temple of Theseus in Athens, which is either inspired or completely mad depending on your view of Victorian ego.

Climbing up takes a solid twenty minutes or so. The hill is steep and can be muddy, so proper walking boots matter. Once you're there, the 360-degree views across County Durham are genuinely worth the effort - on a clear day you'll see right across the region. Inside the monument itself is fairly sparse - a few plaques and that's your lot - but the setting is what makes it work.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though weather dictates how pleasant the walk actually is. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the hike dull. History buffs and fell walkers get the most out of it. Allow an hour total, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping for photos.
